The life of luxury is in the numbers—and across the U.S., a ZIP code defines the most affluent towns.

Whether living along the coast or in the Midwest, there is always a tony neighborhood that defines wealth. The trend among the most expensive homes is all about location. Some of the priciest ZIP codes are located along the coasts. But in landlocked states, they are near lakes or ski resorts.

“The most expensive ZIP codes generally fall into two categories: vacation ZIPs and ZIPs near large cities,” explains Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com®.

“In some states, such as Colorado, the most expensive ZIP codes are in areas that are popular for vacation homes (Edwards, Telluride, Snowmass, Aspen, etc.). In other states, however, the most expensive ZIP codes are adjacent to major cities.”

Within many of those cities, main streets are dotted with ritzy restaurants and boutiques, but what will separate the expensive locales is the price you’ll pay to live there.

Realtor.com analyzed the median home price and median square footage to compile the most luxurious ZIP codes in every state.
