Attempting to buy in the hottest markets on realtor.com® can be hazardous to your bank account. Over half of the hottest markets last month were in California, and our top-ranked market—San Francisco—has a median listing price of $1,199,950.

While you ponder that prodigious price, there is hope on the horizon. Two Midwest metros made their debut in April’s hottest real estate markets. Home to a couple of the nation’s largest universities, both Ann Arbor, MI, and Columbus, OH, graduated to the big time in real estate.

According to Jonathan Smoke, chief economist of realtor.com, “When Columbus, OH, is the 10th hottest market in the country, you know that the Midwest—and the U.S. overall—is back and doing well.”

It also means buyers can buy in a hot market without destroying their bank balance. The median list prices for homes in Columbus ($129,900) and Ann Arbor ($349,900) are refreshing when compared with the high prices in the West.

For a look at what you can buy right now in our hottest markets, we tracked down a cool home in each of the 10 cities. So turn up the air conditioning and enjoy the heat.
