For those real estate reality TV mavens who follow HGTV shows the way football fanatics follow the NFL, the reveal of the annual HGTV Dream Home is a very big deal.
This fantasy abode, designed and decorated by a team of handpicked professionals, is located in a different region of the country each year and offers up a distinct decor vibe each time. Oh, yeah—you can win the place too. Feeling lucky?
This year’s place, a waterfront house in Gig Harbor, WA—a short boat ride south of Seattle—is all about a sleek, modern design aesthetic, married with coastal details. The HGTV design team purchased this four-bedroom home last January, gutted it, and transformed it from floor to ceiling.
“When we saw the house, we immediately wanted it to look like something people would see on Pinterest and pin like something modern and very Pacific Northwest,” interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn told a local news affiliate. “To make sure the house fit in with the really nice modern homes up in this part of the country, we wanted to go with a black exterior.”
For the interior, Flynn chose to focus on bright and modern furnishings, all with a sophisticated coastal twist: a Carrara marble coffee table on top of a natural sisal rug; the stark-white master bathroom with reclaimed 100-year-old wood pillars from an old dock in Tacoma; contemporary art prints alongside a sea-inspired rope mirror on a gallery wall.
Everything was done to optimize the drama of the natural scenery, even down to the transparent garage doors for an unobstructed view of the bay.
“I kept thinking what an amazing experience it would be to get home from a hard day’s work and to pull up to your property, see through glass in your garage out to Henderson Bay,” said Flynn.
The entire giveaway package includes the home, valued at $1.8 million, as well as a $250,000 cash prize from mortgage lender Quicken Loans. See yourself living in the Pacific Northwest? Make sure you enter the drawing by Feb.16. To enter, visit the HGTV Dream Home Giveaway website.
Although the chances of winning are awfully slim (the 2016 Dream Home in Merritt Island, FL, received over 127 million entries), it’s still fun to gawk at, right? Take a look below at this year’s modern manse.
Entryway with matte black exterior
The stark-black roof and siding make the house stand out (in a good way) in its natural surroundings. While the large windows allow the homeowners to enjoy the beauty of the Puget Sound, the durable metal roof will prove useful when foul weather hits.
Glass garage doors
We mentioned those glass garage doors, right? Here they are, making the Puget Sound visible the moment you approach the driveway.
There’s one drawback: Everyone will see your stacks of old magazines or discarded bikes, so you’d better keep the place neat.
Water views from the living room
The Pacific Northwest is beautiful, so why not enjoy it through floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room?
Vintage and modern decor in the dining room
The design team made a conscious decision to balance the modern dark exterior with lighter and colorful interiors. Example: This dining area, with a playful vintage sign and pink Mid-Century Modern chairs.
A staircase in the middle of the home
Of the many industrial decor elements you’ll find in the house, the staircase is the most striking—it goes right through the middle of the house, and the wrought-iron and distressed wood details balance the pops of color found throughout the home.
Millennial Pink bedroom
Clearly Millennial Pink is still in vogue—especially when paired with contrasting shades of navy blue. And who wouldn’t want to curl up in a sumptuous platform bed upholstered in luxurious velvet after a long day on the water?
Coastal-chic bathroom
This powder room gives a nod to the home’s coastal roots without being overtly nautical. We’re loving the striped wallpaper and sink with wood countertop.
Gallery walls throughout the home
This particular gallery wall leads up to the master suite, which fills the entire top floor. We like the way Flynn used an eclectic mix of objects and framed art to give the wall a casual, cohesive vibe.
Master bedroom
Whoever wins the HGTV Dream House had better like quirky wall art. The mural above the bed was created by artist Celery Jones, who was inspired by travel billboards from the 1940s.
Cocktail lounge
Designed with fab waterfront soirées clearly in mind, this lounge—complete with wet bar, two refrigerators, and storage cabinets—is perfect for the homeowner who likes to play good host.
Backyard by the water’s edge
Imagine watching the sunset across the water in the comfort of your own pergola. Sweet! The private dining area includes seating for eight, and the pergola opens and closes as you wish. On the opposite side of the backyard is a stone fire pit. Save a marshmallow for us!
