While some of us are counting down the days until it feels just cool enough outside to justify a pumpkin spice latte, others may be having a hard time letting go of summer. The pool parties! The long, sunny days! The exotic vacations!
If the latter is you, fear not—we’ve got a way for you to keep summer going all year-round: Just follow your nose! Or, more specifically, the colorful nose of the tropical toucan. Yes, that’s right—the same brightly colored bird you know and love from your box of Froot Loops cereal is having a moment in the world of home decor.
The colorful-billed birds follow in the footsteps of pineapple and palm tree leaf prints, which both now have a cult following. While toucans aren’t necessarily known for their flight skills, we do know that Etsy searches for toucan home decor items have soared in recent months.
Wacky as it may seem, the popularity of this particular decor trend makes sense, says Justin Riordan, interior designer, architect, and founder of the Portland-based home staging company Spade and Archer Design Agency.
“We recently have seen a huge uptick in tropical themes at every price point; the next logical step is to go from flora to fauna,” Riordan says. “And what better animal to represent … the tropics than the toucan? From pillows to wallpaper to sculpture, this brightly beaked bird is going to be everything in 2020.”
Ready to be on-trend with a touch of the tropics? Here are some small—and big—ways to incorporate toucans into your home.
Toucans on your couch
If you want to ease into the toucan trend, try starting out with just a throw pillow or two in a toucan print. These festive pillows will look great on any solid-colored couch, armchair, or chaise.
Think these birds are too bright for you? There are muted versions of toucan-themed pillows in fabrics like velvet, which will still look great long after floral and bright colors have been packed away for fall and winter.
